Merry Christmas!

I've been making my own greeting cards for many years but had never drawn my own pictures to put on them before. Now that I've been tangling for a few months, this seemed the perfect opportunity to try making a Zentangle Christmas card. It was a challenge though because I didn't want to use traditional Christmas images yet I still wanted the overall effect to be in the holiday spirit.

Here is the picture that I put on the back of my card:

These are the tangles that I used:

Checkerstar

Gotcha

Lenz

Lily Bridge

Twelve Days of Zentangle - Day 12

For the last day of the Twelve Days of Zentangle, we made Christmas trees by combining three triangle shaped 3Z tiles. I made my own tiles from tan card stock. The instructions in the video have you cut slits in two of the triangles and you are to insert the points into the slits to form the tree shape before gluing the tiles in place. It wasn't necessary to go to that much trouble. I simply glued the three triangles together from the back. This gave me a smoother drawing surface because I didn't have to draw around the slits or the sides of the  tiles where they were inserted into the slits.

I used most of the tangles that Molly used but tweaked or replaced some that I didn't care for. I also used a sepia Micron pen instead of a brown one because I don't have a brown one. As you can see, I went a little crazy with the metallic gold pen. This project was a lot of work but very relaxing and enjoyable.

Twelve Days of Zentangle - Day 11

I had a lot of fun with Day 11's projects. They both are made with Zentangle 3Z tiles which are triangles. Rick and Maria glued two or three of them together to make stars. I had to make my own triangle tiles so mine don't have rounded corners like the original tiles. The example in the photo above was drawn as Maria drew hers in the video. The one below was drawn the same as the one Rick drew in his portion of the video.

DAY 11 TANGLES
· Scena
· Auraknot
· Poke Leaf
· Shattuck

DAY 11 MATERIALS:
· White 3Z tiles (triangles)
· Black 3Z tiles (triangles)
· Micron PN pen (black ink)
· White Gelly Roll pen
· Gold Gelly Roll pen
· White charcoal pencil (optional)
· Pencil
· Tortillon
· Glue stick

Visit the Zentangle blog HERE to read about and watch each day's video.

Because these were so fun to make, I went ahead and made the stars below with my own choice of filler tangles.

The star above has a combination of Auraknot and my variation of a tangle called "Gotcha".

The tangles in the star above are "HUA", "Flux" and "Flair".

I also used the tangle "Flair" on the above star.

Twelve Days of Zentangle - Day 10

Day 10 features black Apprentice tiles. Apprentice tiles are 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches which is a bit larger than the regular ones. After doing my first tile by following Martha's video, I used the same Paradox "string" but filled the triangles with THIS pattern by YuRu Chen called "VLine". As you can see, it fits nicely inside the triangle spaces even though it's meant to be a ribbon tangle.

DAY 10 TANGLES
· Paradox
· Marasu variation

DAY 10 MATERIALS:
· Black Apprentice tile (4 1/2 x 4 1/2")
· White Gelly Roll pen
· White charcoal pencil
· Pencil
· Tortillon

Visit the Zentangle blog HERE to read about and watch each day's video.

I liked the second tile so well that I decided to use the same pattern on a regular size black tile.

Twelve Days of Zentangle - Day 9

Once again I used some of my homemade Bijou tiles for Day 9's project. For the "Renaissance" side of my tiles I used parchment card stock. The surface is a little rough to draw on so I used a Micron 03 pen which has a fatter tip.

Visit the Zentangle blog HERE to read about and watch each day's video.

DAY 9 TANGLES
· Tangles of your choice (the video featured Molygon)

DAY 9 MATERIALS:
· Black Bijou Tile (2 x 2 inches)

Twelve Days of Zentangle - Day 8

I made my own 2x2 inch tiles out of card stock and I was surprised to see how tiny the Bijou tiles are. They were pretty fun to work with though and just the right size for these tiny crowns. I couldn't resist adding some color to mine.

I used a white tile for the crown below and drew mine pretty much like Maria did hers in the video. I used purple colored pencil to accent the jewels and the border and added touches of metallic gold Gelly Roll here and there. I colored the background black with a Micron pen.

I drew the crown below on a black tile with a white Gelly Roll pen. Again, I accented this one with the gold pen as well as some colored pencil.
Visit the Zentangle blog HERE to read about and watch each day's video. You'll also see some of ways that Maria and Rick used their mini crowns. I left mine flat so that I could scan them.

DAY 8 TANGLES
· Noom Repus
· Miscellaneous tangles

DAY 8 MATERIALS:
· White Bijou Tile (2 x 2 inches)
· Micron PN pen (or regular Micron pen)

Twelve Days of Zentangle - Day 7

Once again, I had to wing it and use materials that I have on hand. I don't have any pre-strung Zendala tiles so I had to make my own using card stock and mandala patterns that I found online. I picked out a few designs that weren't too intricate and that looked like they might work well with Zentangle patterns. I lightened the black outlines to a pale gray in Paint Shop Pro then I copied them into Publisher and placed them behind circle outlines the size of the real tiles. I printed three "Zendalas" per page and printed them on three different colors of card stock. I think the tan card stock that I have might be similar to the color of the Renaissance ones.

I made the white tile above first just to get the feel of tangling on a template. I wasn't keen on how the tan tile below was looking at first so I really put a lot of effort into embellishing it until I was happy with it. I like it very much now except for the diamond areas on the outer edge. I might re-make that tile and use a different tangle inside the diamonds.

Twelve Days of Zentangle - Day 6

Maria and Rick introduced a new tangle on Day 6. It's called "Toodles" and it's an organic tangle with an Art Nouveau look.

Visit the Zentangle blog HERE to read about and watch each day's video.

I drew these two examples of "Toodles" last night:

I added little loops at the tops of mine because it felt natural to do so and it made it easier to draw the center stems in one continuous motion.

DAY 6 TANGLE:
· Toodles (new tangle)

DAY 6 MATERIALS:
· Renaissance Zentangle tile (or any color tile)
· Micron PN pen (or any kind or color Micron pen)
· Pencil
· Tortillon

Twelve Days of Zentangle - Day 5

Day 5's project is done with round Zendala tiles so I used my homemade ones again. There are two videos with the first one showing how to get the tiles prepared for the drawing in the second video.

I was skeptical at first when I watched Molly cutting holes in her white tile but, by the time I was finished with mine, I was amazed at the stunning result. I don't think it would be possible to achieve the appearance of depth in the recessed black areas by simply drawing and coloring them in with black ink directly on the white tile. The added shading gives the cutout insets the illusion of being even deeper than just the thickness of the tile.

Maria accented her tile with a brown Micron pen which has a reddish tint. To compensate for not having a pen that color, I used my sepia Micron pen then filled in those spaces with a colored pencil in a rusty color. I love how it turned out.

Visit the Zentangle blog HERE to read about and watch each day's video.

Twelve Days of Zentangle - Day 4

I have a few Apprentice tiles but hadn't used any of them until now. In Day 4's video, Rick demonstrates how to draw "Diva Dance" but with an added fun element that they're calling "sproings". If you're familiar with that tangle, you should be able to spot the sproings on my tile.

Visit the Zentangle blog HERE to read about and watch each day's video.

Twelve Days of Zentangle - Day 3

Day 3 of the Twelve Days of Zentangle introduces a new tangle called "Rumpus". This was my first time drawing on a round tile. I don't have any real Zendala tiles so I cut my own out of card stock using a CD-ROM as a template. I got three round tiles out of an 8.5x11" sheet. I don't have a brown Micron pen so I used a sepia one then added a reddish tint with colored pencils. After that I decided that I wanted to add a little more color. I also colored in the dots with a metallic gold Gelly Roll gel pen.

Visit the Zentangle blog HERE to read about and watch each day's video. They've been posting them around 2:00 pm Central Time every day so far.

DAY 3 TANGLE:

· Rumpus (a new tangle)

DAY 3 MATERIALS:

· White Zendala tile *
· Micron PN pen (you can use a regular black Micron pen)
· Micron 01 pen (brown ink)
· Pencil
· Tortillon

* I cut circles of card stock using a CD-ROM as a template. A CD measures 120mm in diameter and the Zendala tiles are 117mm across.
